This comprehensive text helps equip those who do not routinely provide care to critically ill children and who are not required to have a PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) credential -- such as physicians, nurses, pre-hospital and in-hospital providers outside of critical care areas, outpatient-clinic staff, and school-based providers -- to identify a pediatric victim at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress, intervene early to stabilize the child, and contact the next level of care early. Readers learn to recognize the signs of impending respiratory failure or shock, initiate the appropriate treatment, and follow recommended procedures for preventing disability and death in children. 120 pages, 8 1/2" x 11"

Key Features and Benefits

This student manual is an essential resource for training emergency medical technicians (EMTs), medical and surgical nurses, school nurses, and any other healthcare providers who infrequently see critically ill infants and children. Also useful as a pre- and post-course reference book. Based on the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and ECC.

The classroom- and video-based, Instructor-led PEARS course helps healthcare providers develop the knowledge and skills needed for emergency evaluation and treatment of seriously ill infants and children. The goal of the PEARS course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes. Manual includes information on:

  • recognition of respiratory distress, shock, and cardiac arrest
  • appropriate lifesaving interventions to take within the initial minutes of response until the child is transferred to an advanced life support provider
  • the resuscitation team concept.
