Guidelines 2010: What did they change and what stayed the same?
After 2 ½ years of reviewing the most recent studies on resuscitation the 356 experts from 29 countries published their conclusions in October 2010. Their conclusions covered Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support for everyone from newborns through adults. The American Heart Association, the leading provider of resuscitation education, will be publishing new teaching materials for BLS, ACLS, PALS and the community CPR and first aid courses next year. But in the meantime what do you need to know in order to be current in your practice of these vital skills?
The biggest change is Compressions first!! Don’t wait on a non-responsive patient, start pushing hard and fast. Get an AED as quickly as possible and use it. The Advanced Algorithms have been simplified with an added emphasis on continuous good compressions. Check out the link below for a summary of the changes.
National Institute for Healthcare Education, one the premier AHA Training Centers in the United States has put a summary of the changes on their website that you can access for FREE. Here is the link: http://www.nationalhearted.com/2010_aha_guidelines.html
It is each practitioner’s responsibility to familiarize themselve’s with this material. You are NOT required to update your ACLS, PALS, or BLS until they expire. At your recert class you will be taught the new AHA Guidelines 2010 material. Please go to the link above and read the summary of the changes today so that you will be providing the best care to your patients.
